The ZID ARTCC HF Radio (NARACS)

I sometimes operate HF from work if we are having a quiet night here at ZID ARTCC.  This rig has a BIG signal.  The Collins HF-8070A is set to about 500 Watts PEP, it is optioned with the 1000 Watt output deck and we keep it turned down in the interest of reliability and maintenance cost.  The secret is the HUGE antenna in the back yard.  It is fed with large diameter coax, the box at the base it the rotor, the mast portion of the feed line is rigid copper with a slip ring.  The antenna can rotate through more than 360 degrees due to the slip rings.  The last 4 elements have large copper loading coils of a few turns to keep the element length reasonable.  The antenna is rated 4-30 MHz but works well at 3840.
